Apple Play Dough:
This sensory recipe is so easy for you and your kids to make together. Most of the ingredients are things you probably have on hand (or can easily find.)
With nutmeg and cinnamon, this play dough smells so good and is the perfect sensory activity for fall.
What Are The Benefits Of Playing With Play Dough?
Play dough is one of my favorite things to use in my classroom. Not only is it inexpensive and easy-to-make but there are so many developmental and educational benefits too including:
- Sensory Play: Children learn best and retain the most information when they engage their senses. By forming the play dough into apples and smelling the nutmeg and cinnamon, your students will make a connection to fall.
- Fine Motor Development: Playing with play dough helps to strengthen hand muscles and develop control over the fingers which is needed for writing.
- Themed Activity: Apple scented play dough is the perfect addition to your units on fall, harvest, fruit and produce, and life cycle of an apple.

What’s Needed:
- 1 Cup of Flour
- ¼ Cup of Salt
- 1 Teaspoon of Cream of Tartar
- ½ Teaspoon of Nutmeg
- 1 Teaspoon of Cinnamon
- 1 Cup of Water
- ½ Tablespoon of Olive Oil
- 1 Teaspoon of Red Food Coloring
- Saucepan
- Measuring Cups
- Measuring Spoons
- Mixing Spoon
- Thin Sticks for Apple Stems
- Leaves
How To Make Apple Play Dough:
To begin making this fall play dough recipe, add the flour, salt, cream of tartar, nutmeg, and cinnamon in a small saucepan.
Next, cook the ingredients over medium heat until they are mixed together thoroughly.
Then, add the water, olive oil, red food coloring. After combining the ingredients, stir continually until the mixture thickens and begins to form a ball.
Next, remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the play dough to cool for about 10 minutes.
After the play dough cools, place it on a non-stick surface and knead until the color is consistent throughout the dough and the texture is smooth.
Finally, find thin sticks and leaves from outside and place them in the ball of dough to make them look like real apples.
If you aren’t going to play right away or after you have finished playing, store the play dough in an airtight container to prevent it from drying.
If the play dough does start to dry out, add a little olive oil and knead.
One of my favorite things about this Apple Play Dough recipe is that it only takes about 5 minutes of prep time and 5 minutes of cook time to make.
In just 10 minutes, you can have a fun, fall sensory play activity that your kids will love!
